Rajiv M. Patel [M.D.]

Dr. Patel is currently a dermatopathologist and soft tissue tumor pathologist at Cutaneous Pathology, WCP Labs Inc. in St. Louis, MO. He received his M.D. degree from Flinders University School of Medicine in Adelaide, Australia. Dr. Patel rose through the ranks from Assistant to Associate and finally to Professor of Pathology and Dermatology at the University of Michigan over a period of 14 years from 2009-2023. His original faculty appointment at the University of Michigan followed residency training in anatomic and clinical pathology at Cleveland Clinic, fellowships in surgical and soft tissue pathology at Emory University in Atlanta, a dermatopathology fellowship at Cleveland Clinic, and nearly two years as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Western Australia, and Consultant Histopathologist and dermatopathologist as well as bone and soft tissue pathologist, at PathWest Laboratory Medicine WA in Perth, Australia. Dr. Patel is the former Director (Section Head) of Dermatopathology and founder and former Director of the bone & soft tissue pathology fellowship at the University of Michigan. He has established himself as a nationally and internationally recognized expert in dermatopathology and soft tissue pathology. He has authored or co-authored over 127 peer-reviewed publications, written over 15 book chapters, including contributions to the WHO Classification of Tumours (Skin and Soft Tissue and Bone), and served as co-editor of a textbook entitled Soft Tissue Tumors of the Skin. He serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology and as an editorial board member for multiple journals including the American Journal of Surgical Pathology, Human Pathology and the American Journal of Dermatopathology, among others. He is a highly sought-after speaker with over 135 invited presentations and seminars, including 13 visiting professorships. Dr. Patel has received multiple awards recognizing his academic contributions, including for his role as a teacher and mentor.
